Hide AdInput is being provided by staff at Lothian and Borders Police who regularly update the internet site with the latest traffic information.
Police spokesman Graham Jones explained: "With the onset of the winter months, traffic conditions will worsen and motorists will be wanting to know where and when there are roadworks or tailbacks as a result of accidents.
"This website facility will help keep them up to date with the latest information with the effect, we hope, of less non-emergency calls being received at our control rooms." He added: "This will allow staff to concentrate on more serious incidents and ensure an immediate police response."
