Anti-crime campaign nets £¼m in drugs

ILLEGAL drugs worth more than £250,000 have been seized by Grampian Police in a major crackdown on crime in Aberdeen.

The drugs recovered included large quantities of cannabis, heroin and cocaine. More than 40 people were arrested for drugs-related offences during the targeted offensive to disrupt criminal activity throughout the city.

Chief Supt Adrian Watson, commander of Aberdeen Division, said that more than 100 people in all had been arrested or charged in connection with various offences during the crackdown, code-named Operation Maple, aimed at a range of crimes including youth disorder and antisocial driving, as well as drug dealing.

He added: "These are the issues that communities are consistently telling us that they have a problem with.

"It is commonly known that those involved in the drugs trade see the North-east - and Aberdeen in particular - as a lucrative market to operate in. But through our local policing teams, our communities have taken a stand. The information they have fed into Operation Maple has been invaluable."
