City sets an eggs-ample with new free-range deal

THE city council has agreed to switch to free-range eggs following pressure from local residents.

Green councillor Steve Burgess said the local authority had agreed to stop using eggs from battery farms.

Cllr Burgess, the Greens' environment spokesman, said: "I was very surprised to find out that in this day and age the council doesn't already insist on free-range eggs."

The councillor said he had been contacted by several residents in his Southside/Newington ward who were supporting the national Go Cage Free campaign by Compassion in World Farming. According to Cllr Burgess, the council's new catering contract for eggs, due in September, will specify free-range eggs only.
