North Korea: 99.97% backing for autocracy

NORTH Korea said about 28,000 candidates received 100 per cent voter support in local council elections.

The official Korean Central News Agency said yesterday the election results show the North Korean people are united behind leader Kim Jong-il to build a powerful nation ahead of the 2012 centennial of the birth of the country's founder, his father Kim Il-sung.

North Koreans get ballots that leave them with little choice but to back candidates selected by officials. Turnout was 99.97 per cent for Sunday's local elections.
