Foreign Secretary William Hague has described the situation following the deployment of thousands of Russian troops into the Crimean peninsula as “the biggest crisis in Europe in the 21st century”.

And he warned Russia there would be “consequences” if it did not “respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”.

Mr Hague’s call comes as he earlier called for Russia to de-escalate military action in Ukraine.
