Letter: In the majority

SNP MSP Bill Walker should not be surprised by the abuse and intimidation directed at him following his endorsement of a modest conscience clause about gay marriage (your report, 13 August).

Sadly, civil disagreement is often replaced by hysterical and offensive attacks by tolerance enthusiasts. Gay SNP MEP Alyn Smith's reference to "what goes on in the small, mean, angry heads of bigots" should shock the 39 per cent of Scots to whom he refers (those failing to approve of homosexual "marriage").

I believe that many active homosexuals struggle to reconcile their conscience with their lifestyle, and this tension leads to angry outbursts when the morality of homosexual sex is questioned, and a drive to silence all such voices.
