Staple argument

Our Scottish Government seems to dislike the message coming from the big supermarkets that the added cost of doing business in Scotland might be passed on to Scottish consumers in the event of independence rather than amortised across the whole of the UK as at present (your report, 10 December).

I am unsure whether there is a huge differential in the supply costs for a loaf retailed in Aldershot rather than in Aviemore, however, perhaps we should be more concerned that if the Nationalists were to fail to regain the zero rate derogation on VAT on food currently granted to the UK in their negotiations on European Union entry then all basic food prices would be forced to rise by the EU minimum VAT rate of 5 per cent.
