Six-year-old boy dies after being hit by car outside busy caravan park

It was understood the boy, from Glasgow, had dropped a playing card and was hit after he went into the road to retrieve it.

Ambulance crews were called, but despite their best efforts the boy died from his injuries at the scene.

Holidaymaker William Millar, 46, from Inverness, was one of the first on the scene.

He said: "I looked out and then saw the wee kid lying there so I ran over and tried to do what I could to resuscitate him.

"One woman was doing compressions, and I was doing the breaths but it was no good, he was already gone."

Other witnesses of the aftermath of the crash said a woman, believed to be the boy's grandmother, could be seen sitting on the pavement looking "upset".

Holidaymaker Gerry Hayburn, 47, from Dunfermline said: "We're only here for two or three days and I have a wee one about that age so, for something like this to happen, it's very sad.

"Everyone is walking around holding on to their kids a lot tighter than usual."

It is understood the boy was staying at the park with his grandmother, siblings and young cousins while his parents were at home in Glasgow.

The road outside the caravan park was closed in both directions while investigations took place.

Following the accident, flowers and toys were tied to the railings near the crash site, and council industrial road sweeping vehicle was brought to the site to remove debris.

Holidaymakers were among those who left floral tributes at the scene last night.

One read: "Our thoughts go out to all the family.

"There are no words to express out deepest sympathy - from a mother and a gran."

The driver of the Corsa is helping officers with their inquiries.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.

In particular, officers want to speak to the driver of a white van that was seen travelling towards Longniddry at about the time of the collision.

Holidaymakers at the caravan park called the ambulance immediately after the collision with the child.

A spokesman for Seton Sands Holiday Village said: "This is a terrible, terrible tragedy and has greatly affected all guests and staff.

"We are now doing everything we can to assist the family," he added.Inspector David Milne, who is leading the investigation into the crash said: "It is tragic that a six-year-old boy has been knocked down and killed on the road directly outside Seton Sands caravan park.

"We understand that the young boy was trying to retrieve an item from the road at the time he was struck by a Vauxhall Corsa that was travelling from Longniddry towards Port Seton.

"The driver stopped at the scene and is being interviewed.

"We are particularly appealing for the driver of a white van, either a male or female driver, we don't know, who was travelling east, who may have witnessed the collision, to come forward to let us know what they have seen."

Inspector Milne added: "We have a number of people who witnessed the collision.

"Investigators will try and reconstruct exactly what happened."
