HAWICK'S stint at the Kelso Sevens came to an agonising end in the semi-finals at the hands of Selkirk.

After trouncing Earlston 62-0 in the first round, the Greens were justifiably full of confidence.

Five tries from Neil Renwick, a double fro
m Graham Hogg and Steven Anderson and a score by Ross Gibson saw them comfortably secure their place in the next round against a President's Select team.

And it was more of the same as Renwick and Anderson stole a brace and Hogg and Gibson went over in a 36-7 victory.

Hawick's semi-final clash with Selkirk proved one of the ties of the tournament.

Following a knock-on from Fraser Harkness, Hogg played advantage and released to Keith Davies who ran unchallenged to touch down between the posts.

After things settled down, Scott Hendrie benefited from good movement by Selkirk, scoring and converting to level things.

Renwick again proved instrumental as he dodged numerous tackles and set up Michael Robertson for his first try, with the conversion bringing it to 7-14 at half-time.

However, at the restart Selkirk's Eddie Gauche brought his side level with a quick score, and when Renwick looked to reply quickly he was brought down by Fraser Harkness short of the line.

Gauche enjoyed his second after a break by Lee Jones who also set up Michael McVie to take the score to 26-14.

Hawick kept up the pressure but the Selkirk defence, particularly Harkness, worked hard to thwart any attempts to narrow the gap.

Meanwhile, Hawick YM''s hopes were shattered when they went down 29-0 in the first round to tournament winners Kelso.

YM started well putting early pressure on the hosts and pinning them to their own try line, but when Mee Kaa Eel Hartley broke from well inside his own half to run the distance and score, the visitors' fortunes began to fade.

Sean Common kicked the conversion and Kelso began to increase the pressure on a young YM side. Ian Moodie scored Kelso's second after outrunning the defence on the right to take it to 12-0 at half time.

In the second half, the Tweedsiders scored again when the ball was fed to Greg Minto who had enough space to score in the corner.

From the restart, YM enjoyed their best spell but a long floated pass inside went astray and Darren Gillespie sprinted from inside his own half to score and then convert his own try. And when Nathan Trotter scored his side's fifth it was all over for the visitors.

Hawick: M Robertson, R Borthwick, K Davies, G Johnstone, N Renwick, G Hogg, S Anderson, R Scott, R Gibson, C Murray.
Hawick YM: D McCracken, C Robertson, A Douglas, B Hill, R Halliday, H Neish, S Desport, L Armstrong, G Desport, S McLeod
