Fifa has announced it has opened disciplinary proceedings against the football associations of Scotland and England for the wearing of poppies during last week's World Cup qualifier.

Players from both countries wore black armbands bearing a poppy during England’s 3-0 win at Wembley last week.

The game took place on Armistice Day.

Fifa’s rules forbid “political” statements on shirts.

Senior figures at Fifa - which is world football’s governing body - have said they will not “speculate on any outcome or provide an estimated timeline”.
